Prof. Senait Fisseha is a distinguished Ethiopian American physician, lawyer, and global reproductive health leader whose career reflects a rare integration of clinical excellence, legal expertise, and policy influence. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Prof. Senait Fisseha began her academic journey in her home country, where she briefly studied at Tikur Anbessa Medical School. This early exposure to healthcare systems in a resource constrained environment shaped her understanding of medical inequities and fueled her long-term commitment to improving access to care. Seeking broader educational opportunities, she later relocated to the United States, where she continued her academic pursuits with determination and excellence.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Rosary College, now known as Dominican University. Motivated by a desire to understand both the clinical and regulatory aspects of healthcare, Prof. Senait Fisseha pursued a dual degree program at Southern Illinois University, where she obtained both her Doctor of Medicine and Juris Doctor degrees. She graduated with honors and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, a distinction reserved for top performing Medical scholars who demonstrate excellence in leadership and scholarship.
Following her education, Prof. Senait Fisseha completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a field closely aligned with her passion for improving women’s health outcomes. She further specialized through a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Michigan Medical Center. This advanced training equipped her with expertise in hormonal disorders, fertility treatment, and complex reproductive health conditions, positioning her as a leading authority in her field.
After completing her fellowship, Prof. Senait Fisseha joined the University of Michigan as a faculty member, where she developed a distinguished academic career. She advanced to full professorship, reflecting her contributions to research, clinical practice, and education. During her tenure, she held key leadership roles, including Medical Director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She also served as Co-Director of the Medical School’s Path of Excellence in Global Health and Health Disparities, mentoring future healthcare leaders and promoting interdisciplinary solutions to global health challenges.
In 2014, Prof. Senait Fisseha founded the Center for International Reproductive Health Training at the University of Michigan. The center was established to strengthen collaboration between academic institutions in the United States and medical schools in sub Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Its focus on education, clinical training, and research contributed to building local capacity in regions with high maternal mortality rates. In 2017, she played a pivotal role in the election of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as the first African Director General of the World Health Organization, serving as chair of his campaign and transition. This historic achievement underscored her strategic leadership and ability to operate effectively at the highest levels of global governance.
Throughout her career, Prof. Senait Fisseha has contributed to numerous international boards, advisory councils, and commissions focused on health equity, gender equality, and strengthening healthcare systems. Her work has involved collaboration with global organizations, policymakers, and academic institutions to design and implement inclusive and sustainable health strategies.
During the COVID 19 pandemic, Prof. Senait Fisseha emerged as a leading advocate for equitable access to vaccines and healthcare resources. She worked closely with African leaders and regional institutions to address disparities in vaccine distribution and to promote coordinated public health responses. She also served as a Commissioner on the African Union COVID 19 Commission, contributing to high level policy discussions aimed at mitigating the pandemic’s impact and strengthening health systems across the continent.
In addition, she co-founded and co-chaired the International Conference on Public Health in Africa, first held in 2021. The conference brought together thousands of participants, including heads of government and public health experts, to accelerate Africa’s response to COVID 19 and to foster collaboration. It has since become a major platform for advancing public health dialogue and action across the continent.
Beyond the pandemic, Prof. Senait Fisseha has remained a strong advocate for a reimagined global public health framework that emphasizes equity, sustainability, and regional self-reliance. She has consistently highlighted the importance of investing in local manufacturing of medical supplies, including vaccines and maternal health products, to reduce global disparities and strengthen health security.

She has been named among the most influential Africans and has received honors for her impact on global healthcare and reproductive health leadership. She has also been recognized by academic and professional institutions for her commitment to advancing healthcare access and equity.
Prof. Senait Fisseha has also made significant contributions to scientific research, authoring over fifty publications on infertility and reproductive health. Her work has addressed topics such as fertility preservation, reproductive outcomes after cancer treatment, and innovative approaches to infertility care. These contributions have advanced knowledge in her field and informed clinical practice.
Currently, Prof. Senait Fisseha serves as Vice President of International Programs at the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, where she leads initiatives aimed at expanding access to reproductive health services globally. In this role, she continues to drive impactful programs that improve women’s health and strengthen healthcare systems.
Despite her extensive professional commitments, Prof. Senait Fisseha remains dedicated to her family.
