Dr. Ozuah is the President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, the umbrella organization for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System’s 13 member hospitals, 300 ambulatory sites, and 7.5 million patient encounters per year. A nationally recognized physician, leader, executive, researcher, teacher, and author, Dr. Ozuah leads an organization of 10,000 physicians and 53,000 employees serving a diverse patient population. A National Institutes of Health funded researcher and award-winning educator, he previously served as Professor and University Chairperson of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and as Physician-in-Chief of the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.
Dr. Ozuah earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Southern California, and a PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. Proud of both his country of origin and his adoptive country, Dr. Ozuah is a detribalized Nigerian philanthropist who donated one million dollars to advance his alma mater, the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan. His formative experiences growing up in a society where extreme poverty and significant wealth coexisted in close proximity shaped his worldview. Upon arriving in the United States, widely regarded as the richest nation in the world, he found the presence of deep deprivation both striking and instructive, prompting a lifelong commitment to addressing inequity.
Eliminating health disparities has remained central to Dr. Ozuah’s professional mission. He has welcomed the growing emphasis on population health under the Affordable Care Act, noting that while fiscal pressures may influence reform, the ultimate objective must be alleviating suffering and improving outcomes. He believes the nation must prioritize keeping people well rather than focusing solely on interventions after illness occurs.
A world-class pediatrician with a special interest in asthma, obesity, and environmental exposure, Dr. Ozuah is recognized for pairing clinical expertise with practical judgment. He has noted that conventional medical advice must account for real-life conditions, demonstrating an approach grounded in both evidence and common sense. This balance has informed his clinical practice, teaching, and executive leadership.
While Dr. Ozuah continues to see some patients, his primary responsibility is ensuring the quality, safety, and effectiveness of millions of patient encounters annually across Montefiore’s health system. Holding a PhD in leadership, he has embraced healthcare administration as a platform for broad impact. His interest in leadership developed through studying the experiences of military and industry leaders and was strengthened when he assumed responsibility for leading medical education programs. He found fulfillment in solving complex problems, managing constrained resources, and guiding large organizations through change.
Dr. Ozuah’s trusted friendship with Ruth Gottesman, a former professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, played a pivotal role in her one-billion-dollar donation to the institution. This historic gift made medical school tuition free for all students going forward and reflects their shared commitment to equity, education, and the transformative future of Montefiore and Einstein.
Dr. Ozuah’s career reflects resilience and perseverance. He navigated financial uncertainty during his education and faced early skepticism as a foreign-trained physician. Rather than discouraging him, these experiences strengthened his resolve and commitment to excellence. Today, he is recognized as a national healthcare leader who continues to mentor future clinicians, encouraging them to pursue medicine as a profession uniquely positioned to create meaningful and lasting impact in society.
